House of Ruth Maryland is the only comprehensive intimate partner violence program in Maryland providing specialized intimate partner violence intervention services for Spanish-speaking victims and abusers.

House of Ruth Maryland’s Highlandtown location provides comprehensive Spanish-speaking services for victims of intimate partner violence and their families in the Latinx community. Our victim advocates are fluent in Spanish, trained in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention, and have a deep understanding of the needs and realities Spanish-speaking and immigrant victims face. Our Highlandtown doors and services are available to everyone in the community, including victims, families, and friends of people in need.

Our model focuses on securing the safety of victims and children within the context of promoting empowerment, individual responsibility, and healing.

Spanish-speaking Services

All House of Ruth Maryland services are free and accessible for any victim of intimate partner violence. All services listed below are available in Spanish.

24-Hour Crisis Hotline (410-889-7884) and Chatline

Our 24-hour crisis hotline and chatline is available in Spanish and can be translated into dozens of languages. Victims, families, friends, and community members experiencing or aware of cases of intimate partner violence can call the 24-hour hotline to speak with a victim advocate about ways to get help, safety planning, emergency shelter, and all other services House of Ruth Maryland offers. Chatline is a secure chat feature on our website offering the same services as the hotline, in a secure environment for those who are unable to safely access a phone.

Emergency Shelter

House of Ruth Maryland has an 84-bed emergency apartment-style shelter at a safe and discrete location. Victims and their children in immediate danger can have access to all victim support services and a licensed childcare center and health clinic.

Legal Services

House of Ruth Maryland operates the largest domestic violence legal clinic in Maryland. We provide free legal advice and representation for clients, including peace orders, protective orders, and divorce and custody case management. Our legal advocates are fluent in Spanish and trained in crisis intervention and trauma-informed care and will stand by victims throughout the legal process. House of Ruth Maryland does not provide immigration services, but can help assist clients with resources for our partners who specialize in immigration needs of this community.

Client Service Coordination

Our client service coordinators work one-on-one with victims to assist with safety planning, basic needs assistance, and resource referrals to a variety of agencies we partner with.

Highlandtown Food Pantry

Highlandtown clients have access to a weekly food pantry service, which stock basic food and household items. Clients have the ability to pick up their weekly food pantry items or organize a safe and secure delivery to a secure location. Individual and Group Counseling 

Individual and group counseling with a licensed, trauma-informed therapist is available to all victims within our care.

Counseling and Enrichment Programs for Children and Youth

House of Ruth Maryland provides therapeutic counseling and enrichment services for children of victims of intimate partner violence.

Referral Programs

House of Ruth Maryland offers referral programs for clients seeking services we do not cover. This includes referrals to Healthcare for the Homeless, Casa de Maryland, Esperanza Center and others. House of Ruth Maryland’s Domestic Violence Legal Clinic does not offer immigration services, but we can refer clients to legal clinics specializing in these needs. Abuse Intervention Programs: Si Puedo

The House of Ruth’s Abuse Intervention Program aims to increase the safety of victims of intimate partner violence by holding batterers accountable and teaching non-violent, relationship skills. Those accepted into the program are required to attend a weekly 90-minute group session for a total of 28 weeks. House of Ruth Maryland’s Highlandtown location offers groups for men and women that are held in Spanish.
